Blitzsteel completed this project in 2011 in Western Australia’s southwest for BHP Worsley. Its primary aim was to provide access to additional ore bodies north of the Marradong Mine by extending the conveyor. A primary crushing building and equipment was constructed at the Marradong site, with a short conveyor to a secondary crusher and then a 10.5 km overland conveyor to the stockpile at Saddleback.
Blitzsteel was engaged to supply construction labour and plant. Marradong construction works included a plant conveyor, overland conveying and miscellaneous support facilities. The secondary works at Saddleback included crushing, stockpiling and reclaiming facilities, a feed bin and plant conveyors. All materials and equipment were free-issued with the exception of items identified during construction, which Blitzsteel then sourced and supplied.
The overland conveyor crosses Marradong Brook along a 270 m series of raised gantries. Ore is reclaimed from the stockpile through a reclaim chamber and conveyor tunnel. The reclaim conveyor then takes the ore to a feed bin over an existing conveyor, which was also modified as part of the project.
Bulk earthworks were carried out by another contractor on site, with Blitzsteel performing the detailed earthworks, concreting, structural works, piping, mechanical works and electrical works, excluding commissioning.
The completed works provide additional processed ore to meet the increased capacity of the Worsley Process Plant. The project has also extended the life of the mining facility.
